　　1、I wouldn’t give for sth.

　　例句：The dust at the bottom of the SPA Basin really does have a fascinating story to tell, and now what I wouldn’t give for a few samples of it.(TPO5 L2)

　　语境释义：迫不及待地想要(愿意拿出不舍得的东西交换)

　　翻译：SPA盆地底部的灰尘蕴藏着非常有意思的故事，我现在迫不及待的想要关于它一些样本。

　　2、Pull them from thin air

　　例句：To begin, how do we create fictional characters? We don’t just pull them from thin air, do we? I mean we don’t create them out of nothing.(TPO6 L3)

　　语境释义：凭空捏造

　　翻译：首先，我们怎样创作一个小说角色呢?我们并不是要凭空捏造一个角色。

　　3、Tongue in cheek

　　例句：But if you took away all the DNA that codes for genes, you still have maybe 70% of the DNA left over. That’s the so-called JUNK DNA. Though the word junk is used sort of tongue in cheek.(TPO12 L1)

　　6、In a different light

　　例句：I mean... Being a waiter, I get to see a lot of the professors, like in a different light, we joke around a little you know. In the classroom, they always have to be pretty formal, but …(TPO17 C2)

　　语境释义：从不同的角度，从另外一面

　　翻译：当一个服务员的话，我可以用不一样的方式和很多教授碰面。

　　7、Pros and cons

　　例句：...a bee goes through weighing the pros and cons of pollinating this flower or that flower.(TPO16 L3)

　　语境释义：权衡利弊，仔细斟酌该词组在写作中也较常用，建议考生掌握其基本用法。

　　翻译：一只蜜蜂会权衡利弊，究竟是这朵花上还是到那多花上授粉比较好。

　　8、Lesser-known

　　例句：You are lucky to have professor who includes the lesser-known writer like her on the syllabus, you know, not the usual authors we’ve all read.(TPO10 C2)

　　语境释义：不知名的

　　翻译：你很幸运有这样一位可以把不知名作家的书目列在教学大纲里的教授，你知道，她和别的作家不一样

　　9、Be at odds with

　　例句：They try to fit in with the rest of the world even though it’s at odds with their beliefs and their identities.(TPO4 L2)

　　语境释义：与…相违背、相冲突。该词组在文章朗读时有较强较快的语音连读，即s&a以及t&o这两处。建议考生多听多揣摩。

　　翻译：尽管他们的行为与自己的新年和身份不一致，他们还是试着融入到其他人的世界中去

　　10、Open spot

　　例句：I am afraid we don’t have any openings at lunch time. A lot of students want to work then, so it is really rare for us to have an open spot at that time of day. (TPO17 C2)
